The Wife of Noble Character
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
This is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible because it gives such a clear picture of what God desires from me as a wife and mother. Although it presents a very high standard I love the simplicity and beauty of the imagery.
I know I didn't exactly plant a vineyard, but I think planting a small vegetable garden that provides food for my family definitely qualifies!
I LOVE how planting fruits and vegetables in the Spring leads to me directly providing nourishment for my family during the Summer/Fall months! In the Spring of 2009 when I was pregnant with Katelyn I was way too tired to follow though on my garden plan; however, last year when she was just about 6 months old I felt really compelled to build a raised bed garden for the first time. It took some creativity to fit those landscape timbers into my car around Katie's car seat. After hours of work with the miter saw and drill I had driven the rebar securely into the ground and sustained only minimal injury (fingers pinched between the rebar and timbers). Finally I was ready for my top soil; I purchased a dump truck full of a mushroom blend topsoil from Burkdell Mulch on North 51. Last year's garden yielded quite a nice quantity and variety of vegetables for my family. With only a few small changes to the layout and selection of plants I expect this year's garden to be even more successful!
Today I picked the very 1st of our yellow squash (pictured above) to saute tonight and eat with dinner. I've already eaten a few handfuls of cherry tomatoes - sweet 100's to be exact - but this squash is the first of the vegetables that will actually feed my family. Joe even said he would grill chicken for dinner tonight ... I am really looking forward to our meal together!
